A common personal name in the Maccabean period; the best-known was the priest who initiated the rebellion against the Seleucid rulers in Modein in 167 BCE and whose five sons continued the struggle (1 Macc. 2:1) against Hellenization [[➝ Hellenists]]. Two of Jesus' ancestors bore the name (Luke 3:25).
